The Ponca City Native American Nations hosted the People’s Freedom Caravan on its first stop in Ponca City, OK. The Freedom Riders went on a toxic tour in Ponca City and saw first hand the pollution and environmental racism inflicted by Conoco Phillips Oil Refinery. The youth react to what they learned on the Toxic Tour and to the Leaders of the Ok, First Nation people. The Caravan’s second stop was St. Louis, MO where the Caravanistas stood in solidarity with local activist protesting Peabody Coal, whose headquarters is in St. Louis, MO. Peabody Coal claims coal as an alternative energy source but it is highly detrimental to the environment and Coal mining devastates the land, the communities and the people who live on the land. The People’s Freedom Caravan sang and chanted its way through Louisville, KY., where they held a rally and moved on to march on City Hall in Chicago, IL. When the Caravan arrived in Detroit, MI the Caravanistas marched in solidarity with close to 20,000 activists from around the nation and the globe in the opening march of the 2010 United States Social Forum. Caravans from Atlanta, Georgia, New Orleans, Lo., San Francisco, Ca., and many other joined the New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi Freedom Riders from SouthWest Organizing Project, Southwest Workers Union, Southern Echo and The KUNM Youth Radio Project were a few of the many.
