THE WELLNESS COALITION - New Mexico

TWC1The Wellness Coalition’s Adopt A Classroom program met with 45 (count them) 5th graders from Central Elementary School in Santa Clara today and worked on mapping skills in preparation for some data collection in the field later this semester.

Our Youth Conservation Corps members will be visiting with the classes next week to talk about forest restoration, trail building and what it is like to work in the National Forest.

We are so pleased with the work our The Wellness Coalition (TWC) AmeriCorps members are doing with curriculum and classroom planning and how excited our TWC Conservation Corps members are to share their love of the outdoors with the students. Thanks to Jamie, Heather, Mandy, Tyler, Christine, Chris, Tommy and others.

The “Adopt a Classroom” Program: The Wellness Coalition’s Youth Conservation Corps is doing community outreach and education around forest restoration and ecology with 200 Grant County students grades 3 to 12. Conservation Corps members ages 18 to 25 are being trained classroom presenters working with teachers on enhancing current science and math curriculum, aligned with state standards.

TWC2Conservation Corps Members will Adopt a Classroom and work closely with teachers to design and implement a program that is practical and meaningful. Students will have significant time in the field collecting data and reviewing project specifications.

Thanks to the Sierra Club for the generous support of our Adopt a Classroom Program and helping us “build bridges to the outdoors” for children in the mining district.

More news and formal press releases coming soon. Much more field work, outdoor fun with math and science and classroom preparations to come.

Thanks everyone!!!
