The mission of the NMCL is to coordinate, expand, and enhance the delivery of adult and intergenerational literacy services in the state.  The NMCL was founded in 1987 and is a statewide nonprofit organization providing funding, training, and technical assistance to volunteer literacy programs throughout New Mexico.  These organizations provide one-on-one tutoring to help the almost 25% of the state adult population who cannot read/write above basic literacy level 2.

AmeriCorps*VISTA members serving at NMCL are engaged in capacity building, doing research, and providing direction on recruitment and retention issues.  They are based in Santa Fe.
