ALBUQUERQUE, NM—The New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism and its partners have sponsored and organized eight community “green project” events around the state of New Mexico in recognition of the September 11 (9/11) National Day of Service and Remembrance and as a kick off to the Season of Service which culminates with October 23 Make a Difference Day.

President Barack Obama has proclaimed September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Core to the New Mexico Commission’s mission is engaging state residents in meeting the state's unmet needs. This year the focus will be on the environment; thus, the initial 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance Serve Outdoors Projects are planned for our state.

Commission Executive Director Webb said, “These community projects speak to the willingness of New Mexicans to roll up their sleeves and get involved in making our communities reflect the beauty of our Land of Enchantment.” Partnering with the New Mexico Commission are the Sierra Club, The Center for Philanthropic Partnerships, and We Serve, New Mexico, and together we have provided mini-grants (from $500 to $2,000) for eight “green projects” around the state. Applications were open to all interested organizations across the state, and this year we awarded mini-grants to eight organizations. A second round of mini-grants will be awarded for Make a Difference Day and will soon be available to support community-driven civic engagement activities to coincide with the Season of Service.

The following eight organizations have scheduled the following events to celebrate this special day of service and remembrance:
