New Mexico’s young people have the desire, energy and ability to make a real difference in our communities. Service-learning offers a unique opportunity for them to get involved in a tangible way by integrating community service projects with classroom learning. Service-learning engages students in the educational process, using what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. Our Students not only learn about democracy and citizenship, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through the service they perform. New Mexicans of all ages and backgrounds are helping to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civic engagement through national service projects across New Mexico. Serving with national and local nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations and other groups, these citizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate after-school programs, build homes, conduct neighborhood patrols, restore the environment, respond to disasters, build nonprofit capacity and recruit and manage volunteers. |
